Bankruptcy Costs
If you are considering filing for bankruptcy then there are a few costs you need to be aware of. These costs include court fees, lawyer fees and additional fees involved in filing or bankruptcy or seeking debt relief.
Attorney Fees
Our offices provide you with a free initial consultation which can be extremely beneficial. During this free initial consultation we will look over your financial papers and documentation to decide what is your best option. Our fees after the initial consultation depend on the process.
To keep fees to a minimum it is best to be prepared. This means:
- have your financial documents ready and organized including income statements, assets, property documents and bills
- make a spreadsheet of your monthly income and expenses so we can easily analyse your situation
- have a list ready of the names and phone numbers of creditors
- arrive on time or early
- research the different bankruptcy and debt relief options before attending the meeting so you have an idea of your choices
Factors in Determining Bankruptcy Costs
Our fees will differ depending on the different services. Filing for Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy tends to be more expensive as we must attend a court hearing with you. Debt modification services tend to be less expensive because, in most instances, we do not have to attend a trial and can settle your debts outside the court system. However, the costs will depend on a number of factors including:
- What service you are looking for – bankruptcy, stop foreclosure, loan modification, etc.
- Situation with the creditor harassment and wage garnishment
- The amount of debt you are in
- The relationship you have with your lending companies, creditors, etc.
- How many times we meet to discuss your options
Costs of Debt Relief
Filing for bankruptcy may seem like a Catch 22 situation – you need to pay to go broke. However, it is important to remember that, in exchange for the attorney fees and court fees, you will be absolving your debts and starting fresh. You will not have to give in to constant financial worry, stress and fear that comes with looming debt. You will not have to accept creditor harassment and wage garnishment. In most instances you will be able to keep your assets such as your home and car and walk away from the non secure debts that have been dragging you down. In other instances you will be able to consolidate your debt into one easy stress-free payment. For the first time in a long time, you will feel financially free.
